Maximizing SJMA’s Impact Through Strategic Digital Advertising

The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) has long stood as a cornerstone of cultural innovation in downtown San José, California. Renowned for championing contemporary art with a significant focus on West Coast artists, SJMA is equally celebrated for its deep commitment to inclusivity, community engagement, and accessible arts education. Since opening its doors in 1969, the museum has consistently sought to make art relevant and accessible to all who call the Bay Area home.

Challenges

Despite its rich suite of public programs, rotating exhibitions, and educational offerings for all ages, SJMA faced a persistent challenge: increasing physical attendance and deeper digital engagement through its Google Ad Grant account. When uluad began our partnership, the museum’s Google Ad Grant campaigns were limited by narrow targeting, resulting in low ad spend and underwhelming results. The existing campaigns attracted only a small fraction of website traffic, and converting this interest into actual museum visits remained difficult.

Strategy and Approach

To transform SJMA’s digital advertising impact, uluad took a strategic approach anchored in the principles of optimization and audience expansion. We began by broadening SJMA’s reach, launching a national campaign layered with location-specific keywords to maximize both awareness and relevance. This helped to break through previous spend ceilings and introduced potential museum-goers from wider geographic areas to SJMA’s vibrant exhibitions and events.

But we didn’t stop there; continuous monitoring and performance analysis allowed us to iteratively refine campaigns, further developing highly-targeted, location-based ad groups and improving bidding strategies. By placing a strong emphasis on user experience and tailored messaging, we encouraged audiences to participate in everything SJMA has to offer, from marquee exhibitions to art education activities for both children and adults.

Results

From September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026, SJMA’s Google Ad Grant account saw a dramatic turnaround. The paid campaigns achieved a stellar click-through rate of 12.10%, signaling that our messaging deeply resonated with users. Website sessions surged, nearly 18,708 clicks driven from just under 154,576 impressions. All while spending around $112,412.73 in ad grants funds for the year, finally maximizing the resource’s potential.

Most importantly, our approach delivered tangible, mission-aligned outcomes. Conversion actions totaled more than 985 for event registrations & 599 order tickets for the events.. What had started as a struggle for visibility became a story of meaningful engagement, each new click and conversion representing a connection between the museum and someone inspired by contemporary art.

Through thoughtful strategy, persistent optimization, and an unwavering focus on SJMA’s goals, uluad transformed a struggling Google Ad Grant account into a powerful engine for community impact.
